Online Spending Outperforms Brick-and-Mortar in Key Retail Categories, Finds comScore
comScore has released online spending data by category for the online holiday shopping season, which showed that trends in online spending outperformed offline in several key product categories. Findings showed that the top growing online product category for the season was Sport & Fitness, which grew 18% versus year ago.

Consumer Spending Intentions Reach Lows, According to Discover Spending Monitor
The Discover US Spending Monitor fell for the fourth consecutive month in December, declining more than three points to a new low. Both components of the monthly spending index – consumer confidence in the US economy and consumer spending intent – reached new lows during the month, as concerns about the economy may be weighing on post-holiday spending plans.

According to a new report by The NPD Group, a leader in market research for the wireless industry, 45% of US mobile phone users prefer to use their mobile phones to make calls, and not for other available multimedia features.

Retail Sales Increase 21.2% for Week Ending Dec. 27, ShopperTrak Reports
ShopperTrak’s retail traffic index has reported that total US foot traffic for Christmas week (12/21 – 12/27) fell 4.9% as compared to the same period in 2007, while the company’s retail sales estimate reported a strong 21.2% retail sales increase for the week.

Black Friday Sees $534 Million in E-Commerce Spending, Up 1% Versus Year Ago, comScore Finds
ComScore has reported its tracking of holiday season retail e-commerce spending for the first 28 days of the November – December 2008 holiday season. For the holiday season-to-date, $10.41 billion has been spent online, marking a 4-percent decline versus the corresponding days last year, while Black Friday saw $534 million in online spending, up 1%. For the combination of Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday, online sales were up 2% relative to last year.

eMarketer Revises Online Ad Spending Predictions
eMarketer has revised its Internet ad spending projections, estimating that advertisers will spend $23.6 billion online this year in the US. That estimate is slightly lower than the one eMarketer put out in August 2008, which said that US online advertising spending would reach $24.9 billion in 2008.
